During the Vietnam War, in June 1972, a rocket attack on DaNang Air Base posed a threat to military aircraft stationed there. Fortunately, the aircraft, including an A-4 Skyhawk shown in the image, were protected by revetments on the East Side of the runways, preventing any damage. "In this photograph taken on April 8, 1969, Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Douglas Fish attends to a young Vietnamese girl in the river-island hamlet of Vin Chau, located two miles southwest of Hoi An. Private First Class Michael Wargo, from Westville, Ill., shows his platoon commander, Sergeant John E. Gaines, from Santa Ana, Calif., where a Viet Cong bullet entered his helmet. Despite the impact, Wargo was unharmed, as the bullet did not penetrate the helmet. Wargo later survived being shot in the flak jacket without injury.
