May Belfort 1895 Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec French May Belfort (born May Egan) was an Irish singer who made a name for herself on the stages of Parisian nightclubs with her nonsensical songs and her ever-present black cat, seen in Lautrec's promotional poster. Elles (portfolio cover) 1896 Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec French Elles, a series of ten lithographs devoted to the theme of prostitutes, was based on Lautrec's observations of daily life inside a Parisian brothel where he resided briefly in 1894. The prints are highly original in their representation of mundane aspects of the prostitutes' existence, particularly moments of intimacy and friendship. In this image, a prostitute loosens her hair in preparation for an unseen male client, whose doffed top hat rests on the clotheshorse in the foreground (the prostitute's frilly blue hat is on the bed at left). The decorative, curving silhouette of the woman's blue robe, echoed by the swoop of her orange hair, suggests the influence of Art Nouveau.. Elles (portfolio cover) 334413

Henri Privat-Livemont (1861-1936) was an artist born in Schaerbeek, Brussels, Belgium. He is best known for his Art Nouveau posters. From 1883 to 1889, he worked and studied in the studios of Lemaire, Lavastre & Duvignaud. He later moved back to Brussels, and worked on theaters and casinos there.
