The first Space Shuttle External Tank, the Main Propulsion Test Article (MPTA), rolls off the assembly line September 9, 1977 at the Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans. The MPTA was then transported to the National Space Technology Laboratories in southern Mississippi where it was used in the first static firing of the three main engines. Marshall Space Flight Center had management responsibility for Space Shuttle propulsion elements, including the External Tank. Martin Marietta was the prime contractor who designed and assembled the tanks at Michoud.

Brabazon Makes First Taxi-ing TestsThe Brabazon I, Britain's 130 ton airliner - biggest in the world - made its first tax-ing tests at Filton Airport, Gloucestershire, England, 3 September. A 3,000 yard runway, 100 yards wide, was specially constructed for the aircraft. The plane has a wingspan of 230 feet, a fuselage 177 feet long and the top of its rudder is 50 feet from the ground. It is powered by eight 2,500 horsepower centaurus piston engines. The civil aviation Ministry have told pilots of all aircraft that they must not fly within a radius of 3 miles of Filton airport or at an altitude lower than 5,000 feet during the next 14 days. NASA ER-2 # 809 and its DC-8 shown in Arena Arctica before the SAGE III Ozone Loss and Validation Experiment (SOLVE). The two airborne science platforms were based north of the Arctic Circle in Kiruna, Sweden, during the winter of 2000 to study ozone depletion as part of SOLVE. A large hangar built especially for research, "Arena Arctica" housed the instrumented aircraft and the scientists. Scientists have observed unusually low levels of ozone over the Arctic during recent winters, raising concerns that ozone depletion there could become more widespread as in the Antarctic ozone hole. The NASA-sponsored international mission took place between November 1999 and March 2000 and was divided into three phases. The DC-8 was involved in all three phases returning to Dryden between each phase. The ER-2 flew sample collection flights between January and March, remaining in Sweden from Jan. 9 through March 16. "The collaborative campaign will provide an immense new body of information about th
