More Powerful "Comet" Jet Airliner: Makes Successful Maiden Flight -- The first de Havilland "Comet" jet airliner to be fitted with Rolls-Royce Avon engines recently made a successful maiden flight at Hatfield, when it flew for nearly two hours at heights to 25,000 ft. It was piloted by Mr. John Cunningham, the ***** chief test pilot.The series 2 ***** its more powerful engines will be capable of ***** a capacity payload of some 44 passengers, with ***** and mails, on the world's longest airline ***** The first version of the "Comet" is powered by 'Ghost' ***** and will be in service with British Overseas Airways ***** on the London-Johannesburg route, later this year ***** second version 'Comet' marks the end of the second stage ***** jet airliner project of the De Havilland ***** only two years seven months after the maiden flight ***** original 'Comet'. Football's "T" Formation Takes To The Air. - The U. S. Air Force's newest high-speed light bomber, the Martin XB-51, looks like this from the rear, as the unconventional tail assembly has the horizontal control surfaces mounted on top of the vertical stabilizer and rudder. The wings, which droop when the airplane is on the ground, will become straight in flight. The Martin XB-51 is the Air Force's first three-jet bomber; is the first airplane primarily designed for ground support operations. Now undergoing final systems check-out at The Glenn L. Martin Company in Baltimore, the XB-51 will make its first flight soon. The two-man crew is housed in a pressurized, air-conditioned cockpit with ejection seats. October 3, 1949.
