Britain's Fastest Airliner -- The Hermes IV airliner. Delivery of 25 of these aircraft is expected to commence early next year and a fleet of the 40-seaters is earmarked for service with B.O.A.C. The Handley page Hermes IV, Britain's fastest airliner, is undergoing pre-flight taxying trials. Final construction stages of the 357 - m.p.h. Hermes IV have been remarkable for their speed. Able to cruise at 300 mph and with a range of more than 3,600 miles, the luxuriously appointed Hermes IV is fully pressurised, has a tricycle nose - wheel under carriage and many new features which eugur well for its operation on the Empire routes for which it is designed. New York, New York: July 14, 1938 Police surround Howard Hughes' Lockheed 14N Super Electra airplane at Floyd Bennett Airport in Brooklyn when he landed there after flying around the world setting a new record of 3 days, 19 hours and 14 minutes, breaking Wiley Posts's record. It was part of a promotion to attract people to the New York World's Fair.

The Super Guppy is shown at the Redstone Airstrip. NASA used the aircraft to transport the S-IVB upper stage used on the Saturn IB and Saturn V launch vehicles between manufacturing facilities on the West coast, and testing and launch facilities in the Southeast. This aircraft was built by John M. Conroy of Aero Spaceliners, Incorporated, who started with the fuselages of a surplus Boeing C-97 Stratocruiser, ballooned out the upper decks enormously, and hinged the front sections so that they could be folded back 110 degrees. The Super Guppy flew smoothly at a 250-mph cruising speed, and its cargo deck provided a 25-foot clear diameter.

Britain's Largest Flying Boat Launched -- Britain's largest flying boat, the four engine Short-Saro Shetland, was launched at Rochester today. The aircraft, which can carry 70 passengers with a crew of 11, has a maximum speed of 267-m.p.h. The flying boat has a wing span of 150 feet, a length of 110 feet and an all up weight of 130,000 lbs. It has a range of 4,650 miles cruising at a speed of 184 m.p.h., and is a civil version of the Shetland designed during the war for service purposes. Two de
