FK 23 Bantam, Frits Koolhoven, 1918 The aircraft consists of a hull made up of wooden trusses with a skin of muliplex wood. The nose, with the star -shaped engine, is made of metal. At the front of a wooden propellor. The landing set consists of two wheels with rubber pneumatic tires mounted in a frame of metal pipes of oval diameter. Two wings placed upper (double -decker), between which metal uprights and tension wires. The wings consist of a wooden frame that is covered with lacquered banner. In the upper wing there is an oval opening at the height of the hull that offers access to the thatched chair for the pilot. Steering lever and pedals are available and working. The hull is painted off-white with the English registration number K-123. At the back a black band with a central orange band is painted around the hull. Aviation in Britain Before the First World War Cody aircraft mark IB in the background with a group of handlers (note that the aircraft is out of focus). Cody, wearing his trademark white jacket and cap is in the foreground with a soldier just behind him, walking away from the aircraft. Particularly with his earlier aircraft Cody made constant adjustments to the arrangement of the flying surfaces, often after crashes, in order to obtain better performance and handling. These changes mean that identifying specific sub-marks of Cody aircraft can at times be very difficult, it should also be remembered that because of this constant evolution of his aircraft Cody would probably not have classified them in such a detailed manner.

Aviation in Britain Before the First World War A row of seven army aircraft. The first aircraft is an Avro 500 (number 291) followed by six RE 1's (336, 349, 368 and 329 visible). Mechanics and possibly pilots are stood next to the aircraft.

Photograph 111-SC-26915 shows a three-quarter front view of the Thomas-Morse type MB-1 two-seater fighter machine. This aircraft is fitted with a 12-cylinder, 400 H.P. Liberty engine. Manufactured by the Thomas-Morse Aircraft Corp'n in Ithaca, N. Y., it has a wing span of 37 ft. and an overall length of 22 ft. The photograph was received from the Subject Photographer on September 30, 1918, and is labeled "26915 FOR OFFICIAL USE ONLY."

Aviation in Britain Before the First World War A good view of Cody aircraft mark IC (Cathedral - so named because of its size and the size of the hangar it required and the katahedral (lower at the wing tips) arrangement of the wings) being pulled sideways from the shed by Cody and an assistant. The most important change made with this mark was moving the pilots seat to in front of the engine. The aircraft was altered several more times, here the additional elevators at the side of the central one (which has now been split in two down the centre) are missing, the rudder is in the original position above the elevator and a tail skid has been added. Aviation in Britain Before the First World War Cody making adjustments to a motor kite with the help of some soldiers. This was flown without a pilot in 1907, first of all tethered to a cable attached to two large poles and then in free flight. Cody's powered kites were the first powered aircraft to fly in Britain. After first testing it attached to ropes Cody set the rudder for a circular trip and launched it with a small amount of petrol in the engine, when this ran out it glided safely to the ground. Lessons learned from this were invaluable when Cody began building manned aircraft with the similarities in design being clearly visible.

Paris, 5/21/1927. The "Spirit of Saint Louis" upon his arrival at Le Bourget airfield, where he was received by thousands of Parisians. The first solo, non-stop air crossing of the Atlantic ended happily. The legend of the great American hero, Charles Lindbergh, began.

The Supermarine S6 which helped Great Britain win the Schneider Trophy in 1929. The Schneider Trophy was a competition for seaplanes held in 1929 off Cowes, Isle of Wight. The plane is estimated to attain a speed of 360 mph, fitted with a modified Rolls Royce engine. Date: 1929

June 18, 1937 launched the world's first non-stop flight Moscow - North Pole - Vancouver (Washington, USA) performed by the crew of ANT-25 which included the crew commander - V. P. Chkalov, co-pilot - G. F. Baidukov and navigator - A. V. Belyakov.

Hubert Latham's 'Antoinette' monoplane in Blackpool, England. Taking part in the first officially recognised aviation meeting to be held in Britain, the Blackpool Flying Week, which took place in October 1909. Latham took off and covered 8 miles in 11 minutes at almost 70mph with winds of at 40 mph, conditions which aviators until then had believed made flying excesively dangerous. Date: 22 October 1909
