The Royal Air Force Training Command, 1939-1940. Pupils at No. 1 Air Observer and Navigation School prepare to board Fokker F.XXXVI, G-AFZR, for a training flight at Prestwick Ayrshire. G-AFZR (formerly PH-AJA of KLM) was purchased by the RAF in 1939 as a navigation trainer, being flown and maintained by Scottish Aviation Ltd, Prestwick, under its civil registration. New "Motor Cycle Of The Air" Demonstrated 35 Miles To The Gallon Plane -- The Fairey Junior, new light-weight plane, landing at White Waltham yesterday after a demonstration flight.At White Waltham Aerodrome, Berkshire, yesterday, a new single -seat, open-cockpit plane, the "motor bike of the air" was demonstrated, which, with its twin cylinder engine has a fuel consumption of 35 miles to the gallon.The Fairey Junior, the first motor cycle of the air to be demonstrated in Britain since the war, is about 20lb lighter than the average motor cycle, has a cruising speed of 66 m.p.h. and a landing speed of 40 m.p.h. Smertenko's plane on the tarmac at Croydon Aerodrome. Professor Johan Smertenko, Vice-president of the American Committee for a Free Palestine, defied the British Home Office ban on his entry to Britain and landed at Croydon Aerodrome, London, from Paris in a privately-chartered single-engined French plane. He said that owing to the intervention of the British authorities no airline would sell him a ticket. Purpose of his visit, he explained, was to wind up personal and organisational affairs and to take possession of personal property for removal to the United States. Smertenko was in Britain last December, but as a result of allegations he made about British conduct in Palestine it was announced by the Home Office that steps would be taken to exclude him in future. The NACAs Lewis Flight Propulsion Laboratory acquired the Grumman S2F-1 Tracker from the Navy in 1955 to study icing instrumentation. Lewiss icing research program was winding down at the time. The use of jet engines was increasing thus reducing the threat of ice accumulation. Nonetheless Lewis continued research on the instrumentation used to detect icing conditions. The S2F-1 Tracker was a carrier-based submarine hunter for the Navy. Grumman developed the Tracker as a successor to its Korean War-era Guardian patrol aircraft. Prototypes first flew in late 1952 and battle-ready versions entered Naval service in early 1954. The Navy utilized the Trackers to protect fleets from attack.

Coast Guard Helicopter Unloaded After Rescue of 11 from Labrador. Coast Guardsmen at Brooklyn Air Station unload the helicopter that rescued 11 Canadian airmen from the North Labrador wilderness. They are shown easing the dismantled helicopter from an Army Air Transport Command plane, which carried it to Goose Bay, Labrador. The Coast Guard helicopter, with Lieut. Britain's Latest Jet Bomber Goes On Show -- Farnborough, Hampshire: of impressive size and appearance is Britain's latest jet bomber, the short SA-4, seen hare where the flying display and exhibition of the Society of British Aircraft constructors are staging a show which opens to the public on Wednesday.Striking feature of Short SA-4 is that the 4-engined aircraft has its jets mounted in pairs, one above the other, on either side of the engine. About 50 different types of planes will be on view at the show. More than half of them will be of military type. September 10, 1951.

RAF Planes Flies Over North Pole - Made by the light of the midnight sun, at Keflavik, just before the take-off. In the background is a USA Catalina and one of four other Lincolns which made a navigational flight of 2,478 miles in a circle covering Shannon Island, Disko Island, and back to Iceland. This RAF Lincoln Aires III flew over the North Pole July 24 during a 3,553-mile non-stop flight from Keflavik (Iceland) to Fairbanks, Alaska.
