Wooden mockup of the Northrop Pioneer, new cargo-passenger transport designed especially for operation in rugged and difficult country, shows the spacious fuselage of the plane. Three-engine design provides high performance and flying dependability, and high-wing plan raises the wing propellers above the heads of passengers or crew members working near the plane on the ground. Full-span flaps and Northrop-designed retractable ailerons, used successfully on the famous Northrop Black Widow P-61 night fighter during the war, enable the Pioneer to operate from runways too small for other similar cargo craft.
