The red heel was a popular aristocratic conceit, based on French court styles of the 17th century, and had come into general use by the 1770s. Although the original owner is not known, these shoes passed subsequently from Sir William Quiller Orchardson, R.A. (1832-1910) to his friend John Pettie, R.A. (1839-1893), both of whom were noted Scottish painters and who may well have used the shoes as models for their genre paintings.. Culture: probably European. Date: 1775-1825.One of the few 18th century examples of children's footwear preserved in the collection, this infant's shoe features an appealing two-tone yellow color scheme to add interest to the simple form. The cut derives from the adult latchet-tie style, but has the added feature of an ankle strap. Although not a feature of adult footwear at the time, ankle straps are common on children's shoes, as they secure the shoe more surely to wriggling feet. Date: ca. 1860.Not all garments were created to be worn. The extremely unusual style and degree of ornamentation make it clear that this pair of shoes is not normal childrenswear. Most outstanding is the intricate impressed diaper and leaf pattern which has been composed to fit the cut of each piece of the upper exactly. The shoes are most probably a craftsman's sample made to exhibit the quality and skill of his workmanship. As was traditional across the skilled trades, a shoemaker would develop his skill through many years of apprenticeship, ultimately demonstrating his proficiency with sample works exhibiting a variety of techniques. Masterworks were also made by experienced craftsmen as exhibition pieces to display their advanced skills to potential customers and peers. Copyright: xZoonar.com/GalinaxxTolochkox 9721721Pattens. Culture: European. Date: 18th century.Fashionable ladies' shoes of the 18th century were commonly made with an upper of figured silk or brocade over a thin leather lining, and hardly suitable to any attempt to venture outdoors on dirty cobbled or unpaved streets. In order to provide some modicum of protection, two styles of overshoes were used: clogs and pattens. The clog was essentially a thick sole made to conform to the bottom of a heeled shoe, with straps securing it to the foot. The patten, represented here by a classic example of the period, featured a wooden sole elevated on an iron ring, and was seen as the distinctly more utilitarian and less fashionable choice. The shape of the wooden sole can be seen to mimic the sole of the type of shoe with which it was worn. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.Shoes 1840s American.
