British Canals in Wartime- Transport in Britain, 1944 Boatman Ronald Hambridge (left) collects his rations from the headquarters of the Grand Union Canal Carrying Company at Hayes in Middlesex. The original caption explains that canals workers are greatly affected by food rationing because they are unable to register with one particular shop. Instead, 'at Hayes they are issued travellers vouchers, obtain supplementary tea sugar and dried milk because of the heavy nature of their work, get orange juice for their children'. Clearly visible on the counter are tins of dried milk and bottles of orange juice.
