A design by the Futurist artist, Leon Bakst, expressing the 'spring time of the earth', 1913. Bakst designed dresses and scenery for the Russian ballet at this time. When creating the costumes for Debussy's ballet, 'Les Jeux,' Bakst tried to express the ideas of the future. He recognised the importance of freedom of movement in womenswear. Date: 1913

March 1910. Food Toilette. The Simple "Toilette" whose model We Offer to our Readers must be made of good fabric and of an impeccable cut, since all its charm lies in both things. It can be made of Raged cloth, Velvet, Bengaline, silk muslin or Crystalline silk. The color must be Snow white, pinkish white or Blue. The only decoration is a small turtleneck, lace cuffs and an artistic buckle.

Design for an afternoon dress, made of white voile over straw coloured silk. The bodice and skirt were trimmed with Irish lace, finished with a belt of Liberty satin. Date: 1905

Armed and dangerous (EV007946_H)

In mid-19th century Siam, both men and women wore wore similar hairstyles, with the head shaved except for a round tuft on the crown which was spiked like a brush. Both sexes also wore mid-length trousers, or 'pha nung', which were supported by a belt, often made from silver. Middle and upper-class women generally wore a sarong or cloth over their left shoulder to cover their breast, leaving their right arm free. Before this time, the midriff and chest were usually left exposed with tattoos decorating the torso.

Two outfits inspired by the Russian Allies during World War One. On the left, a blue serge is employed for the dress with trims in narrow black braid and astrachan, which is worn with a white patent leather belt. The suit on the right is of white velour enriched with astrachan, finished with braid buttons. The toque hats are of astrachan draped slightly to one side and both outfits are completed with Russian lucky tokens worn around the neck. Date: 1915
