Uncle Wiggily Longears is the main character of a series of children's stories by American author Howard R. Garis (1873-1962). This illustration is from Gariss Uncle Wiggily and Alice in Wonderland and shows Uncle Wiggily and the Duchess. Uncle Wiggily stories first appeared in the 'News' in 1910, were syndicated in 1915, and continued to be published for more than forty years, at one time appearing in one hundred newspapers. Garis wrote 35 volumes of Uncle Wiggily stories under his own name, as well as numerous other children's books under several pseudonyms. William Edward Bloomfield Starkweather was also a painter, teacher, and writer, known for impressionist landscape, paintings and book illustrations.
