He established his first business before the age of 25 and built his first square piano in 1777. Fifteen years later, he moved his business to London, in order to avoid the French Revolution (he was endangered by his fame and for having built instruments for Marie Antoinette). He later reestablished himself in Paris, building pianos in the English style.
