Mr. Magnen, Vice-Chairman of the "Physique Nucleaire" of the College of France has invented with the aid of his collaborator Mr. Chanson, the first "Protonic" microscope. This machine is similar to the electronic microscope, but deffers from the latter by the fact that the shot which is used is the "Proton" and the optical deviation is Electrostatic instead of magnetic. This machine which obtains an enlargement of 500,00 times, will unable to study, amongst others, the microbes of diseases which up to this date one had not been able to detect. March 21, 1952.

Candlepower Beats Nuclear Fission -- The boundless energy of the atom is useless in face of the electricians' strike, and scientists resort to the old-fashioned candle to install an atomic energy machine at the Engineering and Marine Exhibition at Olympia, London, to-night (Tuesday). The machine, which appears on the Shell-Mex and B.P. Limited stand, will demonstrate the use of radio-active isotopes for the investigation of engine wear. British Contributions To Tropical Health -- As the effect on the liver is of great importance in many tropical diseases, the physiology workers at the Liverpool School of tropical medicine are studying this in great detail. Here, Dr. W.H. Andrews (left) and his assistant Mrs. Yvonne Cane are setting up the apparatus which he has designed for experiments on the effects of the anaemia caused by malaria in the liver. The chemical effects of the disease are reproduced artificially by feeding various gases into the blood stream (the controls are on the right), and results are recorded by delicate apparatus on the left, which Dr. Andrews is here adjusting.
