A fine view of a 'Benson' raft - a huge seagoing log raft designed to reliably transport millions of board feet of timber (at one time - this card says 8 million feet) through the open ocean. Held together with giant logging chains, their cargo of logs and often finished lumber goods went from the outlet of the Columbia River in the United States into the Pacific Ocean and south 1100 miles to San Diego, California. The Champions of the Mississippi - "A Race for the Buckhorns" 1866 Frances Flora Bond Palmer American, born England The Mississippi River, one of the world's great rivers, intrigued Americans. Steamboats provided important and practical large-scale transport of passengers and goods both up and down this mighty river; such riverboats were able to navigate the shallow waters, as well as upriver against strong currents. Currier & Ives issued more than thirty prints of activity on the river, with steamboat races ranking among the most popular images. In this print's dramatically moonlit Mississippi River scene, four steamboats, with flames and smoke trailing from their smokestacks, travel under full power. At the right of the image, the "Queen of the West" and "Morningstar" lead the race, while two steamboats sail behind. On the shore at the left, there is a bonfire and a small crowd of men cheering and waving to the boat passengers. The print's title identifies this race as one "for the b

The Ohio River near Wheeling, West Virginia 1859-60 Lefevre James Cranstone British The English genre artist Cranstone visited the United States for less than a year shortly before the Civil War and produced hundreds of ink and watercolor views of Washington, D.C., Niagara Falls, and sites in Indiana and West Virginia. Most of the surviving drawings found their way into public collections in Indiana and Boston. Cranstones interest in steamboat traffic along the Ohio River could have been inspired by Charles Dickenss account of travel along the waterway, published in his “American Notes” of 1842. In the 1840s, steamboats became the principal means of transportation on the Mississippi and its tributaries, which linked Americas western frontier..
