Changing of the Watch - "Pa" Pigeon Relieves "Ma". Prologue - Seven decks up, in the busy communications office of the U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters, Washington, D.C., Mr. and Mrs. (Bill and Coo) Pigeon are keeping house. One day Coo tapped on the window and attractive SPAR Ensign Dorothy Egger, of 142 Irving Ave., South Orange, N.J., invited her in. Next day, "Ma" pigeon came back with Bill, her mate, bearing twigs. They built a nest in a wooden nut dish atop a filing cabinet. Then came the eggs - Mr. and Mrs. Pigeon are a happy couple and one day two white eggs appeared - as eggs will - in the nest. Each morning and afternoon thereafter, Bill Pigeon flew up to the seventh deck of Coast Guard Headquarters, tapped on the window and SPAR Ensign Egger let him in.

Blitz Canteen- Women of the Women's Voluntary Service Run a Mobile Canteen in London, England, 1941 Rachel Bingham scrubs the floor of the WVS canteen on her return to the Canteen Service depot, somewhere in London in 1941. The original caption states that Rachel had not had to scrub a floor before she joined the WVS, as she is part of 'Society' and had a maid to do it for her. This demonstrates that all parts of society were volunteering for the WVS.

In 1887, Dr. Joseph Kinyoun set up his one-room Hygienic Laboratory in the Marine Hospital on Staten Island in New York to research cholera and other infectious diseases such as diphtheria, typhoid, smallpox, typhus, plague and tuberculosis. This was the beginning of the National Institutes of Health.
