Artist's Conception Of An Earth Satellite -- This is an artist's conception of a space station outlined by a University of Maryland physicist, Prof. S. F. Singer, now in Copenhagen, who called his idea the "mouse," meaning minimum orbital unmanned satellite of the earth. He calculated it would circle about 200 miles above the earth at a velocity of 17,280 miles an hour--about the soma statistics mentioned in today's White House announcement. July 29, 1955. S72-32719 (March 1972) --- With four of the six planned lunar missions completed, this chart has been prepared to show the various areas of the lunar "nearside" to be visited by astronauts representing the NASA Apollo program. Apollo's 11, 12, 14 and 15 are shown at their respective landing points. Apollo 16 and Apollo 17, planned for later this year at Descartes and Taurus Littrow, respectively, also are depicted on the map.

Artists concept of the Local Scientific Survey Module (LSSM), one of two designs for a Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV), depicted on the lunar surface A Bendix Corporation concept, this configuration weighs more than 8,000 pounds, is 21-feet long, 15-feet wide and has 6 wheels with 5-foot diameters. The LRV was developed under the direction of the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) to give Apollo astronauts a wider range of mobility on the lunar surface.

In 1986, NASA introduced a Shuttle-borne ultraviolet observatory called Astro. The Astro Observatory was designed to explore the universe by observing and measuring the ultraviolet radiation from celestial objects. Astronomical targets of observation selected for Astro missions included planets, stars, star clusters, galaxies, clusters of galaxies, quasars, remnants of exploded stars (supernovae), clouds of gas and dust (nebulae), and the interstellar medium. Astro-1 used a Spacelab pallet system with an instrument pointing system and a cruciform structure for bearing the three ultraviolet instruments mounted in a parallel configuration. The three instruments were The Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope (HUT), which was designed to obtain far-ultraviolet spectroscopic data from white dwarfs, emission nebulae, active galaxies, and quasars; the Wisconsin Ultraviolet Photo-Polarimeter Experiment (WUPPE) which was to study polarized ultraviolet light from magnetic white dwarfs, binary stars, ref

This artist's concept depicts the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) being positioned for release from the Space Shuttle orbiter by the Remote Manipulator System (RMS). The HST is the product of a partnership between NASA, European Space Agency Contractors, and the international community of astronomers. It is named after Edwin P. Hubble, an American Astronomer who discovered the expanding nature of the universe and was the first to realize the true nature of galaxies. The purpose of the HST, the most complex and sensitive optical telescope ever made, is to study the cosmos from a low-Earth orbit. By placing the telescope in space, astronomers are able to collect data that is free of the Earth's atmosphere. The HST detects objects 25 times fainter than the dimmest objects seen from Earth and provides astronomers with an observable universe 250 times larger than visible from ground-based telescopes, perhaps as far away as 14 billion light-years.
