This finely wrought example for the highest end of the market was probably intended for devotional purposes. It would prompt its user not only to reflect on the passing of time and the transience of life but also, more practically, to time half-hour periods of prayer and meditation. Nuremberg became a center of sandglass production, uniting new glass technologies, local metalworkers, and a ready source of particularly fine reddish sand from the nearby village of Weissenbrunn.Elizabeth Cleland, 2017. The clock has an engraved back plate that was fashionable in late seventeenth-century London. The engraving was done by a relatively small group of specialists who had varying degrees of skill. Their work is unsigned and for the most part remains anonymous. The signature here is that of the maker of the movement, the clockmaker John Andrews.. Table or bracket clock. British, London. 1690. Author: Florence Stevenson.Mantel clock (pendule). Parisian-made gilt-bronze clocks were extremely popular in the Netherlands. The Swiss clockmaker Cresp established himself in Amsterdam around 1760 and imported French clocks and cases. Depicted on the case of this mantel clock is the legendary Roman warrior Coriolanus. His mother, Veturia, begs him to abandon his plan to lay siege to Rome out of revenge.. This is an early Amsterdam longcase clock. This new type of clock was introduced to the Netherlands from England around 1680. With its long pendulum, its timekeeing is more accurate than other types of clocks. The shape and decoration of the case are based on English clocks. Only the carving displays a recognizable Amsterdam style.Ladies' watch in 18-carat gold case. Chromolithograph from Edwin Streeter's Gems Catalog, Bond Street, London, circa 1895.Calendar watch ca. 1650 Watchmaker: Thomas Alcock The concentric chapter rings of this unusual dial indicate the time of tides (presumably at London Bridge), mean solar time (I.XII), the age of the moon in its monthly cycle (1.291.2), and the day of the month (1.31). The moonfs phases can be read though the circular aperture in the center disk. The February 1661 issue of Kingdoms Intelligencer, a newspaper published by the English parliament in opposition to the king, reported the loss of a comparable watch by Alcock.. Calendar watch. HorologyObelisk clock with a Franklin movement ca. 1785-90 Case maker: David Roentgen The unusual obelisk shape of this case accommodates the swing of the pendulum and reflects the new taste for ancient Egyptian art, or Egyptomania,” in Europe at the time. The finial at the top of the clock is, fittingly, in the form of the double-faced head of Janus, the Roman god of beginnings and endings. The simplified movement—consisting of just three wheels, a four-hour spiral-ring dial, and a single minute hand—was invented by Benjamin Franklin in the 1760s or 1770s. Franklin may have come in contact with cabinetmaker David Roentgen and clockmaker Peter Kinzing while in Paris. Kinzing improved upon Franklin’s original model: the addition of a small pointer, seen through an aperture in the minute hand, allowed for a clearer determination of the correct hour. Though Franklin intended for his simplified movement to be used in economically produced clocks, here it has been employed for one of the most luxuVOC Lantaarn, Anonymous, 1700 - 1800 lantern Square hand lantern on iron pedestal with swiveled seams and spherical legs. They reflect the popularity of Asian prints and decorative objects at this time in Europe and the United States. Tiles were also all the rage, as their easy maintenance appealed to the Victorian-era obsession with cleaning. Tiles had endless design potential and were used to decorate objects from fireplace surrounds to furniture.Mantle Clock Supported by a Hotei ('Laughing Buddha'), Mennecy Porcelain Manufactory, French, active 1735 - 1773, soft paste porcelain; enamel, brass, steel, glass, bronze, gold, porcelain, A white porcelain figure of Budai on a gilt bronze four legged base; circular clock in bronze housing covered in small white porcelain flowers on top of figure's head., France, 1740-45, ceramics, Decorative Arts, clock, clockGold watch, all Walker, c. 1750 - c. 1800 Gold watch with enamelled dial. Symbols of vanity, voluptuousness, deceit, humility, and pride, mirrors were also associated with prudence, a virtue. Venus, goddess of love, frequently looked at her own comely reflection in a looking glass. By the sixteenth century, the mirror was a codified attribute of female beauty, seen, for example, in Cesara Ripa's 1593 Iconologia with the personification of Bellezza Feminile (Feminine Beauty).Renaissance mirrors were often concealed behind curtains or shutters, which served to protect the fragile glass. This handsome example is exceptional in having not one but two sliding shutters: the mirror, behind the top shutter, is mounted in a second inner shutter that could be pulled open to one side (the shell-shaped volutes served as handles). The shallow rebate behind the second secret shutter undoubtedly contained an illicit image, probably a portraMonstrance early 20th century (original dated late 15th century) Portuguese. Model of a screw sleeve between stern and stirring stage, with a part of the keel. The screw light device consists of a loose metal frame with a normal two-leaf screw, which can be lifted up and down in the sleeve on a rope, which runs over a disc upstairs in the screw sleeve and a disc in the screw frame. The propeller shaft must first be withdrawn for this. The screw window moves over vertical rails against the stern and the screw stitch, which are provided with teeth; This includes palls of the screw window that prevents the back sliding. The catches can be pulled back to two ropes, so that the screw frame can pock up. Clamping rods against screw and stern can block the movement of the screw frame.
