Minister Of Transport Opens New Central Line Extension -- Mr. Alfred Barnes at the controls as he drove the first train over the new extension.The Minister of Transport, The Rt. Hon. Alfred Barnes P.C; M.P; officially opened the Central Line extensions to West Ruislip, Loughton and Hainault when he pressed a lever on the platform at Greenford Station which raised a golden portcullis dividing the old line from the new. Then he stepped into a special train, took over the controls and drove it to West Ruislip.The extensions, London's biggest Underground expansion for 31 years, carry the Central Line from Greenford to West Ruislip in the West and from Woodford (Essex) to Buckhurst Hill, Loughton and Hainault in the east. The cost of the 10mile extension was more than £2,000,000 1/2. November 19, 1948.

A group of Russian refugees are using their finances to build passengers planes at Roosevelt Field, L.I. with a view to establishing a passenger service and replenish their funds.
