The world's first electric tramway, was tested on April 15, 1881 in Berlin's first Lichterfelde. It was an invention of the great electrical engineer Werner Siemens. The opening of this first electric tramway took place on 12 May 1881 with special memory party.

The State Railways, SJ YOA1 31, under building on the trolley and the machine factory in Falun. SJ YOA1 31 was an electric -powered test rail bus built by ASEA and ASJ in 1948. The rail bus was produced to test whether electric rail buses could replace the diesel -powered on the electrified stretches. The trial turned out well and SJ put the rail bus in regular traffic and decisions were made to convert 30 ordered diesel rail buses to electric rail buses.
