Date: 1868.This grand piano was known as a "Plain Grand Style 2" piano. The 8 foot 5 inch piano was Steinway's flagship model and their first piano with eighty-eight keys. It was the ancestor of the Centennial Grand introduced in 1875 that became the iconic "Model D" Steinway concert grand piano. This instrument has Steinway's patent resonator and patent double repeating action inside of the rosewood case and supported by three serpentine legs. By the time this instrument was built in 1868, Steinway & Sons had become the leading piano manufacturing in the United States. Innovations such as the cast iron frame and overstringing, both present on this instrument, were adopted by piano manufacturers worldwide. The company's innovations, which included the cast iron frame"Plain Grand Style 2," case finished January 9, 1869 by Hebeler; sold September 29 to G. It was probably originally made for seven or eight courses (pairs) of strings, but in the seventeenth century the neck, bridge, and pegbox were replaced or modified to give the instrument a Baroque configuration. In the nineteenth century, the neck was reduced, fixed frets were added, and the instrument was changed to six-strings, like on a guitar. Sixtus Rauchwolff had an excellent reputation in his day and was a maker of lutes for the prominent Fugger family and the court orchestra in Stuttgart. A label inside the instrument identifies him as the maker and 1596 as the date of the lute. The name of Matthias Hummel, who probably made the Baroque alterations to the instrument, also appears.. Valve trombones were useful in situations where using a slide was awkward, such as while marching or playing in a cramped orchestra pit.The valve system used on this instrument is detailed in Saxs 1859 patent (France, No. 39371). It is an ascending system, since the valves do not add extra tubing to the instruments length. Instead each of them isolates different amounts of the instruments total tubing. Each valve is to be used on its own and causes the instrument to sound a half-tone lower than the previous valve. Sax applied his six-valve independent system mostly to saxhorns and trombones. Also detailed in the 1859 patent is the valve venting system seen on this trombone. While John Rose senior was among the earliest known of English viol makers, his son was among the most celebrated, and regarded as "the finest of all viol makers" in Thomas Mace's Musick's Monument of 1676. This instrument, dated ca. 1600, is attributed to the younger John Rose.Description: Repeatedly altered; high arched, three-piece spruce table with wing added on left lower bout probably dates from 18th century rebuilding as a cello; table edges are doubled and purfling does not match that of the maple back and ribs which bear floral and zoomorphic decoration incised with a hot needle; ribs were cut down, then widened and doubled with cross-grain beech; two-piece back of small horizontal figure has lower wings, of which the right iString instruments on display at a violin maker's (luthier's) shopbaby and violin isolated on white.
