Date: 1693."The Gould" violin has a two-piece maple back with a tight flame and a two-piece spruce top with an orange-brown varnish. Although modern performers continue to use seventeenth- and eighteenth-century stringed instruments by great makers, nearly all of the instruments have been modified in order to remain useful as performance spaces grew larger and repertoire pushed instruments to create louder sound over an extended range. In 1975, The Metropolitan Museum had the luthier Frederick J. Lindeman of Amsterdam modify "The Gould" so that it would be in a Baroque configuration. He based his alterations on what was known of historical setups from the late seventeenth century, specifically he patterned the fingerboard and tailpiece after surviving original examples on the 1690 "Tuscan-Medici" Strad houseViolin leaning over wall, square image, 3d renderingSenior expert violin maker luthier, wrinkled old hand varnish with brush classic handmade violin paint natural ingredient recipe in Cremona Italy home of best artisan of this kind, macro close up, selective focus, bokehDetail inside the body of a black lacquered grand piano Detail inside the body of a black lacquered grand piano Copyright: xZoonar.com/StevenxHeapx 1199810J.H. Culture: French. Dimensions: Height: 24 in. (61 cm)Diameter (Of bell): 5 1/2 in. (14 cm). Maker: Adolphe (Antoine Joseph) Sax (Belgian, Dinant, Belgium 1814-1894 Paris). Date: ca. 1855.When the saxophone was patented in 1846, the wind family lacked a robust lower voice. Sax developed the saxophone to fill this gap. Although he struggled to promote the instrument to conservative orchestral composers, it enjoyed success as a band instrument during Sax's lifetime. The saxophone achieved universal popularity through jazz and pop, two genres that, ironically, did not exist until long after its invention. These associations, emblematic of America, have made the saxophone a potent cultural and political symbol. The saxophone has become one of the most widespread instruments in the world. Its vocal qualities, such as its highly expressive and flexible tone and the ease with which pitch can be manipulated to play "blue" notes made it the archetypal instrument of jazzThree Chitarroni. 'Chitarroni' means large guitar, but this instrument is a Theorbo or bass lute. It is thought that at least two of these lutes are Venetian.Siamisen, Kokiu, Biwa, Musical InstrumentsClose-up of a flute on music sheets near rosesSquare Piano 1829 Jonas Chickering American Chickering was the first important manufacturer of pianos in America, incorporating steam power in his factories and innovations like the firm's use, beginning in 1837, of a one-piece cast iron frame. By the 1850s it had superseded Erard as the premier piano manufacturer, and in the 1860s and 1870s Chickering and Steinway engaged in a fierce rivalry. Chickering was the first American producer of grands, but pianos produced for domestic use including squares like this instrument as well as uprights far outsold the larger, more expensive models. This square piano, like others of that name is rectangular in shape, and has a mahogany case with rosewood striping. It has four turned and fluted legs with brass casters. The damper pedal is mounted to a pedal lyre in the middle of the keyboard. The compass of the instrument is FF-c4 (68 keys) with ivory naturals and ebony accidentals.
