Madonna and Child ca. 1325 Workshop of Ugolino da Siena (Ugolino di Nerio) Ugolino was a pupil of Duccio, the preeminent painter in fourteenth-century Siena and a pivotal figure in early Renaissance art. He may have assisted Duccio in painting the ""Maestà," the celebrated altarpiece for Siena Cathedral, completed in 1311. The present painting, which formed the center panel of a polyptych (multi-paneled altarpiece) was modeled upon the Madonna and Child in the "Maesta," and Ugolino may have used templates to transfer the design.. The Holy Family ca. 1512-13 Joos van Cleve Netherlandish The motif of the Virgin and Child is based on a celebrated work by Jan van Eyck, but with the addition of a figure of Saint Joseph. The wine and fruits are a reference to Christ's incarnation and sacrifice. Yet, presented as part of everyday life, they also testify to the emerging genre of still-life painting. The combination of quotidian domestic intimacy and symbolic meaning must have had mass appeal, since many variations of this painting were produced for sale on the open market.. Madonna and Child with the Annunciation and the Nativity. Artist: Goodhart Ducciesque Master (Italian, Siena, active ca. 1315-30). Dimensions: Overall, with engaged frame, 12 1/8 x 8 1/4 in. (30.8 x 21 cm); painted surface 10 1/4 x 6 1/2 in. (26 x 16.5 cm). Date: ca. 1310-15.This delicately painted panel is by a close follower of Duccio and employs some of his favorite devices, such as the Child playing with the veil of the Virgin, who engages the gaze of the viewer-worshipper. Its small size made it perfect for private devotion, as it could be easily moved. The scenes of the Annunciation and Nativity helped focus meditation on the life of the Virgin.
