Virgin and Child.The courtly manner of the Virgin and Child, the elegant style and the use of precious and translucent alabaster suggest that this statue was commissioned by Margaret of Austria or someone around her court. Margaret served as Regent of the Netherlands, based in Mechelen, on behalf of her father, Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I.

Shown here under Catherines feet is the Roman emperor Maxentius, a persecutor of Christians, who had her tortured on a wheel and then beheaded.

Within the genre of Indo-Portuguese ivories, popular subjects include Christ as the Good Shepard’ (the image of Christ as child would have related to similar bronze statuettes of the God Krishna) and the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception,’ which shows Mary atop a crescent moon, both of which remain ever-present icons in South Asia’s diverse religious landscape.

Bishop. Sacred bishop stands with an open book in partially hidden left hand, while some fingers of the right hand are between the pages. Under the miter decorated with windows and with ribbons to the shoulders, two curls appear on the forehead. He is wearing a bar, amict, albe, dalmatics and choir cover. The latter is closed on the chest and included under the right arm. The shoes with tripping out under the albe.

Saint Anthony Abbot ca. 1500 Attributed to Nikolaus von Hagenau German The legend of Saint Anthony Abbot, a fourth-century Egyptian hermit, tells of the saints heroic resistance to the devils torments. Here, he triumphs over the devil, who writhes under his feet. The saints staff originally would have impaled the monsters mouth. Saint Anthonys order was founded in Europe in the eleventh century and was dedicated to the care of the sick. The Antonites had two hospitals in the Alsace—at Isenheim and Strasbourg—and this intense, expressive, and psychologically charged figure may have been made for one of them. Carved in the round, it may have been carried in procession and placed on an altar shrine or on a bracket against a column. Virgin and Child.After 1609, mass-produced pipe-clay statuettes of the Virgin underwent a revival. In that year, a medieval statue from Utrecht was found at Foy in the Ardennes when an old oak was felled. The miraculous power of the Notre-Dame de Foy attracted countless pilgrims for whom statues such as this one, based on a medieval model, were made as luxury souvenirs.

The Virgin and St John the Evangelist.The figures of the Virgin and the Apostle John originally flanked a crucified Christ. The Virgin is represented with an expression of intense sorrow, while he gazes upwards in dismay. Her masterfully carved, flowing robes and her face were inspired by the Italian Baroque. Johns dynamic pose is derived from a famous sculptural group from Classical antiquity, the Laocoön.

Date: ca. 1480.Carved in high relief, this sculpture was undoubtedly the focal group in the central shrine of a large winged altarpiece of a type that flourished in southern Germany and Austria in the late Gothic period. The image of the Virgin on a crescent moon reflects the vision of Saint John (Apocalypse 12:1): "a woman clothed in the sun, and the moon was under her feet."
