This striking image of the coastline of southwestern Saudi Arabia was taken by astronauts on the International Space Station. Patchy cloud cover partially obscures and blurs the city lights, especially in the vicinity of Khamis Mushait and Abha. While much of the country is lightly populated desertand relatively dark at night due to lack of city and roadway lightsthe southwestern coastal region has a more moderate climate and several large cities. Three brightly lit urban centers are visible at image top left Jeddah, Mecca, and Taif. Jeddah is the gateway city for Islamic pilgrims going to nearby Mecca, a religious journey known as the Hajj. Taif is located on the slopes of the Sarawat Mountains and provides a summer retreat for the Saudi government from the desert heat of the capital, Riyadh. Bright yellow-orange lighting marks highways that parallel the trend of the Asir Mountains (image center), connecting Mecca to the resort cities of Al Bahah and Abha. Smaller roadways, lit with

View of separated lightning strokes in a cloud-to-ground lightning strike over city at night. This picture of scientific interest was made possible by zooming a photographic lens during the full interval of the lightning flash, thereby separating and recording on film each electrical stroke contained within the strike. And the effect of zooming records the city lights as streaks across the film. Tucson, Arizona, USA.

STS082-765-007 (21 Feb. 1997) --- This scene of the sun setting on the Space Shuttle Discovery's almost empty cargo bay symbolizes the successful conclusion of the mission, as the seven astronauts inside the crew cabin approach one of the final mission chores -- that of closing the cargo bay doors. The astronauts earlier completed five days of Extravehicular Activities (EVA) designed to service the giant Hubble Space Telescope (HST), now noticeably missing in the bay. At bottom center is part of the top of the exit airlock, making its first flight.
