Owner: Palazzo Comunale Antiquities: Antique statues and busts. Object Notes: Two Hutzel photo campaign dates, one December 22, 1982, the other date is not legible. There are two sets of prints, one with numbers and an "A" set with its own numbers. At this time, the "A" set matches to the negatives we have; however, the negatives are missing for the numbered set. Since the two sets are virtually identical, it would in most cases be possible to find an image in the "A" set that would have a negative. Numbered set: 72 prints; "A" set: 94 prints. Landscape with Two Ruined Castles 1847 France. In addition to being a major presence in nineteenth-century French literature, Victor Hugo holds a unique position in the realm of the visual arts. His drawings established him as one of the most influential draftsmen of his time, a bridge between the romantics and the symbolists. It is the large-scale abstract works, such as this drawing, broadly handled, unclear, brooding, and mysterious, which are Hugoís greatest legacy. This particular drawing was obviously highly prized by Hugo; only his major works received lengthy dedications, and this drawing is inscribed on both the mat and frame. The inscription reads in part ìStanding, facing each other, they resemble two black giants ready for battle.î. Brush with brown ink and brown wash, over black crayon and graphite, with shellac, on ivory wove paper, laid down on tan wove paper . Victor Marie Hugo
