Here, Paul Cézanne used a layered field of graphite marks and transparent planes of watercolor to describe foliage and natural contours, with blank passages of paper heightening a sense of space and light. Watercolor strokes and graphite lines create a harmonious rhythm across the surface of the drawing. Cézanne used drawings like these, which he made in the countryside around his home near Aix-en-Provence in the South of France, to experiment with form, structure, and space, creating images that appear at once dense and atmospheric. PYRAMUS en Thisbe Anonymous, 1580 - 1596 print Two fragmentary prints with a landscape with fountain. Thisbe discovers her dying beloved Pyramus, on which she commits suicide with his sword. Pyramus stabbed himself because he thought this was killed by a lion. De Leeuw runs in the background. A Latin text in the lower margin. The fragment with the dying pyramus is missing. Northern Netherlands paper engraving Thisbe kills herself with Pyramus' sword (the scene may be represented near a fountain)

Antoine Vollon depicted this mound of freshly caught fish in a dynamic manner that merges his subject with the substance and movement of paint itself. Slippery fish are evoked in long brushstrokes and touches of color, while a wicker basket and bed of reeds are partially conjured through marks that appear to have been scratched into the still-wet paint with the brush handle. With both sites the negs arrived separately from the prints, yet all negs were labelled as Urbino, Palazzo Ducale, making it difficult to match some negatives to their prints. German-born photographer and scholar Max Hutzel (1911-1988) photographed in Italy from the early 1960s until his death. The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. Images are organized by geographic region in Italy, then by province, city, site complex and monument.

Ophelia (Shakespeare, Hamlet, Act 4, Scene 7) March 1, 1866 After Sir John Everett Millais British Here, Hamlets rejected lover, her mind unhinged, has fallen into a brook while picking wildflowers. Inspired by an evocative description of Ophelias death in Shakespeares Hamlet (act 4, scene 7), Millais painted the subject for a London Royal Academy exhibition in 1852; this masterful print reproduces that composition. As a member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, Millais challenged artistic convention and spent months outdoors painting the lush setting, and then posed a model in a bathtub in his studio to complete the composition. The paintings hyperrealistic detail and collapsed space initially unsettled viewers, but this later print encouraged admiration for the groundbreaking conception.
