Young Woman in Bed (Jeune femme au lit) Édouard Vuillard (French, 1868-1940). , 1894. Oil on board, 10 1/16 x 14 in. (25.5 x 35.5 cm). Intimate in both scale and subject matter, this work typifies the artists oeuvre of the 1890s. Deep in thought, the unidentified young woman projects the inner contemplation that was at the heart of the aesthetics and philosophy of French Symbolism, to which Vuillard subscribed. Vuillards sister Marie served as one of his most frequent subjects, and the painter is known to have painted several images of her in her sickbed in 1894, though she is not specifically identified here. The artist demonstrates his facility for rendering the pattern and texture of textiles, interspersing touches of paint with unpainted areas of his unconventional cardboard support, especially in the treatment of the figures peignoir. This painting also provides insight into Vuillards interest in spatial ambiguities, evidenced in his delineation of the corner of the room thro

Date: ca. 1907.A leader of the American Arts and Crafts movement, Dow's advanced ideas concerning color and design are beautifully conveyed by his woodcuts. Born in Ipswich, Massachusetts, the artist studied tonalist painting in France for five years then returned to Boston in 1889. Fascinated by Ukiyo-e prints, Dow examined examples at the Museum of Fine Arts, together with Japanese printing equipment at the Smithsonian Institution. After mastering a multi-block process, he created forty compositions between 1891 and 1921, many printed in multiple variations with experimental inking. These works explore the expressive potential of color and, in 2016, the Museum acquired a significant group, including Marsh Creek. Exemplifying Dow's mature technique, no key-block was used in this print, and

Brooklyn Bridge at Night Joseph Pennell (American, 1860-1926). Brooklyn Bridge at Night, 1922. Aquatint in black ink on cream, light-weight, slightly textured laid paper, Sheet: 8 3/8 x 10 1/2 in. (21.3 x 26.7 cm). After many years abroad, Joseph Pennell settled in Brooklyn Heights in 1921. His upper-story apartment afforded magnificent views of New York, its waterways, and its bridgesall of which were regular subjects in his art. Pennell achieved the tenebrous effects of this work with aquatint, an etching technique in which the picture is conceived in tone rather than line. Aquatint uses a plate coated with a porous, grainy ground. During the bath, acid bites the underlying metal around the tiny grains, thus creating a subtly patterned area that prints as a tonal wash. Varying the bath time for different sections of the plate results in darker or lighter tones. American Art 1922
