The French publisher Gustave Pellet, hoping to attract new customers, persuaded Lautrec to make a series of ten prints, plus frontispiece and cover, depicting brothels. Although it was not unusual to see prostitutes pictured in the popular press, Lautrec was the first well-known, successful artist to tackle this subject. The set was a commercial failure when it first appeared, perhaps because the scenes are not erotic. Lautrec had said that "they are women to my liking", and between 1892 and 1895 he often lived in various Parisian brothels for weeks at a time. This allowed him to witness the daily lives of the women, including the intimate acts of sleeping and bathing, and to sense their suffering. The result is that only two of the scenes show prostitutes as desirable temptresses. The remainder depict

Sir Launcelot and Elouise the Fair, for "The Story of the Champions of the Round Table" 1905 Howard Pyle Elouise the Fair greets Sir Launcelot in an abbey courtyard in Pyle's image, drawn to illustrate "The Story of the Champions of the Round Table" (1905). The artist also wrote the related text which tells how Elouise, seated in an apartment overlooking a courtyard, heard "a sudden sound of a great horse coming on the stone pavement of the court below...arose hastily...saw how he was that came...and ran down to the court...several of her maidens with her." Pyle was aware of the work of European contemporaries and skillfully adapted his style to suit particular subjects. A great lover of the middle ages, he here echoes Edward Burne-Jones's designs for William Morris's Kelmscott Press and Dante Gabriel Rossetti's seminal images for Moxon's 1857 edition of Tennyson.. Ker-Xavier Roussel rendered this dog-training scene in pure, flat shapes, with no indication of middle ground. He focused on the play of silhouettes-and the humorous fact that the prim foreground figure is someone the little dog will never please.

During the early 1890s, Édouard Vuillard repeatedly represented his mother and older sister, Marie, in domestic settings. This drawing relates to a pastel and painting, all of which show Marie standing before a mirror, raising her arms as if to adjust her hairstyle. A charcoal study of a nude male appears on the verso, suggesting that the artist may have reused the sheet.

By the 1890s lithography was becoming reaccepted, and even celebrated, as an important medium for original artistic expression. Many artists in France began experimenting with the technique, often in collaboration with the Parisian art dealer Ambroise Vollard. He commissioned this elaborate color print from Pierre-Auguste Renoir, who worked closely on its creation with the master lithographic printer Auguste Clot. First, Renoir drew his image on paper. That drawing was transferred to the printing stone, on which Renoir could make additions or adjustments using lithographic ink. Next, a black-and-white impression was pulled, and Renoir colored this impression directly with pastel. Clot then used this image as a guide to prepare the multiple color stones for the final lithograph, which retains the l
