The Virgin and Saint John the Evangelist.These two statues originally stood underneath a large sculpture of the crucified Christ. The Virgin bows her head in sorrow, while the expressive gaze of the young apostle John, Jesuss favourite, is directed upwards to the right. Large sculpture groups such as this were normally placed high up on the screen that separated the chancel from the nave of the church.

Her scepter, depicted as a rose branch, alludes to the homily of the Virgin as the rose without thorns (or without sin) or as the rose of Jericho that sprang up at the resting places of the Holy Family during the Flight into Egypt. The dove held by the Christ Child represents peace, purity and the Holy Spirit. This work, with its elegant proportions and horizontal, looping drapery folds, is related in style to a large sculpture of the Virgin and Child given to the abbey of St.-Denis in 1340 by Jeanne d'Evreux, the widowed queen of Charles IV. The apparent wear on the carving may have been caused by repeated touching and kissing. It may come from a Franciscan community, the Minori Osservanti in Foglino or perhaps Assisi.. Maria with child. She stands on a plinth-shaped soil with the right leg forward, keeps the naked child with the right hand, to the viewer, she states with the left-hand bones. With both hands, the child holds a rosary hanging around him, to which a prayer note hangs. To the head, Maria is wearing a wound pearl band, about the underlet a robe with sleeves and low rectangular neck cutting. The jacket that is to the right is ceased under both arms.

Enthroned Virgin and Child mid-14th century Italian The sculpture is created by pressing linen reinforced with glue into shallow molds and mounting the figure on a wood backing and adding paint and gilding. This work seems to be a unique surviving example of this technique. The Virgin is seated upon a throne displaying lion heads, a reference to the Throne of Solomon. Significantly, a number of votive offerings are incorporated into the interior of the figure: a pearl rosary and bobbin lace and other fabrics. The figure is said to have come from the convent of Santa Chiara in Vaglia, Tuscany, indicating that it was probably made for a Clarissan convent, a sister order following the Franciscan rule.. The angel stands on a peak pedestal, which is at the front, at the rear a notch and is provided at the bottom of a threaded hole. In the back, a portion has been saved for the eye, in which the wing part can be kept with a pin. The right hand and the object that the angel held are missing.

Saint Christopher Carrying Christ 1510-20 German According to legend, Saint Christopher devoted his life to carrying the weak and poor across a river. One night, when he was carrying a child, he felt his burden grow heavier with each step. When questioned, the child declared that he was Christ and that Christopher was thus bearing the weight of the world. The widespread cult of Saint Christopher stemmed largely from the belief that gazing on his image would protect the faithful from storms and other threats in their travels. Although not fully carved in the round, this figure was probably intended as an independent work to be placed on a console or against a pier. It is executed in a highly expressive and animated style, with the saint looking intensely at his youthful burden, while his hands rest on his hip for support. The drapery sweeps around the figure, mirroring the water swirling around his feet, suggesting the integral relationship between man and nature.. Saint Christopher Car

Date: 1510-15.This Virgin and Child originally was joined by a seated Saint Anne, the Virgin's mother, to form the Holy Kinship, a group representing three generations of the Holy Family. The scale of the group suggests that it comes from the lower section, or predella, of an altarpiece.
