Study in Black and White. Moving majestically through floe ice, this huge berg was spotted by a Coast Guard plane during the 1950 International Ice Patrol as it made its way toward the North Atlantic shipping lanes. It was estimated to be from 220 to 225 feet in height. Coast guard planes and vessels participating in the 1951 International Ice Patrol are on the alert for such dangers to navigation. Their task is to locate and report the progressive movements of icebergs and field ice, so that surface navigators may be kept informed. Activities of the assigned units are coordinated by the Ice Patrol Commander from headquarters at Argentia, Newfoundland. Ice broadcasts twice daily give merchant ships and other surface craft current information on conditions so that they may give the icy monsters a wide berth.
