Geoffrey Harold Woolley VC (1892 1968) first Territorial Army officer to be awarded the Victoria Cross. On 17 April 1915; the British Army captured Hill 60; a low rise to the south-east of Ypres. In the midst of fierce German efforts to retake the hill; Second Lieutenant Woolley's company repelled numerous attacks through the night.

This illustration, titled The Road to Vidalia, accompanied text in Mary Johnston's book about the Civil War in the United States that was titled Cease Firing and was published in 1912. It was done by the renowned American artist and illustration N.C. Wyeth (1882-1945), who studied under Howard Pyle. It shows soldiers pushing a cannon through mire and muck, as horses pull the cart and all. Officers urgeon their troops. Vidalia is in Louisiana. Blue uniforms were worn mostly by Confederate troops, and gray by Union troops.

Fort Gregg, VA, April 2, 1865In the last days of the Civil War, General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia was fighting with its back to Richmond. These battle-weary but determined Confederates were facing overwhelming odds. A section of guns from the Third Company, Washington Artillery of New Orleans, "...the most famous of the confederate volunteer artillery organizations," was posted at Fort Gregg, a critical portion of the thin line of defense close to the Appomattox River. If the fort fell, the Union forces could break the Confederate line. On April 2, 1865, the Union forces attacked Fort Gregg. The 270 defenders had to hold until Lieutenant General James Longstreet's men could occupy new positions. Assault after assault broke against the walls of the fort like a rising blue tide against a rock. One of the assaults swept over the parapet of the fort. The Tonkin Campaign (French: Campagne du Tonkin) was an armed conflict fought between June 1883 and April 1886 by the French against, variously, the Vietnamese, Liu Yongfu's Black Flag Army and the Chinese Guangxi and Yunnan armies to occupy Tonkin (northern Vietnam) and entrench a French protectorate there. The campaign, complicated in August 1884 by the outbreak of the Sino-French War and in July 1885 by the Can Vuong nationalist uprising in Annam, which required the diversion of large numbers of French troops, was conducted by the Tonkin Expeditionary Corps, supported by the gunboats of the Tonkin Flotilla. The campaign officially ended in April 1886, when the expeditionary corps was reduced in size to a division of occupation, but Tonkin was not effectively pacified until 1896.

South Korea -- February 2, 1951In August 1950 the Korean War was less than two months old, and Puerto Rico's 65th Infantry Regiment was on its way to the combat zone. The regiment landed at the port city of Pusan on the Korean Peninsula's southern tip, where U.S. forces had been holding a perimeter against the Communist North Korean invaders. Sent into action immediately, the Puerto Ricans took part in the U.S. breakout and drive to the north. Following the brilliantly planned and executed surprise landings at Inchon, U.S. and other United Nations forces drove deep into the mountains of North Korea. At that point a huge Chinese Army entered the war. The U.S. Eighth Army was overrun, and the 1st Marine Division, with attached U.S. and British Army units, was completely encircled. In one of the greatest fighting retreats in history, the outnumbered Marines battled their way south to the coast.
