World War I Military Life

Where the Surf Rolls Up to the Jungle. Coast Guardsmen and Marines struggle with heavy war machines in the boiling surf of Cape Gloucester on the western end of New Britain Island. Amphibious tractors supply the pulling power to cross the shallows from a Coast Guard-manned LST to the beach, from which the tanks and guns will disappear into the thick jungle.

A photograph taken in 1918 at Edgewood Arsenal in Maryland shows a football squad from the Chemical Warfare Service. The squad is numbered 60487 and is wearing uniforms with the symbol A.C. This image was captured by photographer S.C. and was received on February 19, 1921. There are additional notes mentioning the American National Association (ANA).
