Aerial Photography during the Second World War A hand-held F24 aerial camera. The F24 was first produced by the Royal Aircraft Establishment in 1925 and was used by the Royal Air Force for day and night aerial photography until 1955. It was very reliable although it lacked the high definition of the F8 camera and was therefore of limited use for military mapping. The F24 could be accommodated within most aircraft types and consisted of a magazine, camera body, shutter gearbox and lens cone, all of which were interchangeable. It had a focal-plane shutter with speeds ranging from 1/40 to 1/120 second. The hand-held version of the camera was operated by a hand drive projecting from the camera gearbox.

Indiana Coast Guardsman is Hero of Normandy Beachhead. Twenty-year-old Coast Guardsman Gene Oxley, coxswain, of Indianapolis, Indiana, performed one of the outstanding deeds of valor in the D-Day invasion of Normandy, when he swam through a Hell of machinegun and mortar fire, carrying a guide line from his LCI to the beach. Then he wrapped the end of the line around his waist and served as a human anchor while 39 Yankee soldiers attempted to follow it through a choppy surf to shore. Only six of the soldiers made it. Coast Guardsman Oxley previously had carried in the guide line through the surf at bloody Salerno. A four-invasion veteran, the youthful Hoosier participated in the landings on North Africa and Sicily, as well as Salerno and Normandy. He is back in the United States on temporary duty. Oxley's mother, Mrs. Hazel L. Oxley, lives on R. R. 16, Indianapolis, Indiana.

He Made Pop a Promise -- And Kept it in the Palaus. When Coast Guardsman Ernest E. Jullerat, storekeeper first class, enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard he promised his dad that he would participate in more battles than "the old man" did in World War One. The elder Jullerat had rolled up a score of five. Young Jullerat kept his promise, when he fought in the assault upon the Palaus Islands, 515 miles from the Philippines. That was his sixth invasion from a Coast Guard-manned invasion transport. No wonder he proudly raised the sign, "I did it, Pop." Jullerat's home is in Dunbar, W. Va.
