While they included the main elements of the traditional almanac, their primary purpose was to sell their product. From their simple beginning, they had evolved into colourful and heavily illustrated works with a sophisticated use of images.

Apartheid was characterised by an authoritarian political culture based on baasskap (or white supremacy), which encouraged state repression of Black African, Coloured, and Asian South Africans for the benefit of the nation's minority white population.

A drawing by the Austrian artist Friedrich Schiff (1908-1968), who lived in Shanghai during the 1930s. His images exemplify the 'anything goes' atmosphere and indulgence amidst poverty that characterised Old Shanghai and which would soon be brought to an abrupt end by Japanese invasion (1937) and Communist revolution (1949).
