Royal Air Force- West Africa Command, 1941-1945. Squadron Leader Billy Drake stands in the cockpit of his Hawker Hurricane Mark IIB, BD897, at Hastings, Sierra Leone, at the conclusion of his command of No. 128 Squadron RAF. Note Drake's personal emblem ('Zut') painted on the nose, and the red, white and blue spinner sported by many of this unit's aircraft. Drake joined the RAF in 1936 and was posted to No. 1 Squadron RAF with whom he saw action in the Battle of France, until he was shot down and wounded on 13 May 1940. After recovery that October, he commanded a flight of No. 421 Flight, specialising in low-level fighter reconnaissance work over the Channel. Following a spell as a Chief Flying Instructor with Operational Training Units at Heston and Landow between January and September 1941, he was posted to West Africa to command 128 Squadron, and succeeded in scoring one of that unit's rare victories on 13 December 1941 when he shot down a Martin M-167F of the Vichy French Air Force

RAF Capture Italian S.M. 81 Bomber An Italian Savioa bomber force landed at Husn bal 'id, 150-miles East of Aden and the crew were taken prisoner. 'Homo Fantastico' was the Italian pilot's tribute when he heard that a British pilot had taken off a strange three-engined aircraft from a bumpy wadi in the desert and landed it safely 150 miles away. This image shows the captured bomber at Aden.

Royal Air Force Fighter Command, 1939-1945. Mechanics look over the cockpit of Messerschmitt Me 410A-3, TF209, at No. 1426 (Enemy Aircraft) Flight at Collyweston, Northamptonshire. This aircraft was formerly F6-OK of 2(F)/ 122, which landed intact and was captured at Monte Corvino, Italy. It arrived for testing at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough, on 14 April 1944, and was also evaluated by the Aeroplane and Armament Experimental Establishment, Boscombe Down. TF209 flew with the Fighter Interception Unit at Wittering from August 1944 until March 1946 when it was transferred to No. 6 Maintenance Unit at Brize Norton.

Royal Air Force Operations in the Far East, 1941-1945. Airmen inspect Mosquito Mark II, DZ695, on an airfield in India following delivery by No. 1 Overseas Aircraft Despatch Unit. This was one of the first Mosquitos sent to the Far Eastern theatre for trial purposes and was issued to No. 27 Squadron RAF at Agartala. Royal Air Force Bomber Command, 1942-1945. A cannon shell exploded in the rear turret, killing the gunner, Sergeant R F Haynes of Nuneaton Cheshire, while further strikes smashed the radio and navigational equipment, and riddled the fuselage of the aircraft with holes. The pilot, Sergeant A H Moores of Bromley, Kent, who was on his fifth operation over Germany, carried on nevertheless and bombed the target before making a succesful return to Scampton.

No. 22 (army Co-operation) Group, Royal Air Force, June-november 1940. Westland Lysander Mark II, R2007 'LX-U', of No. 225 Squadron RAF deploys its ventral message hook for an in-flight pick-up during a training flight at Tilshead, Wiltshire. R2007 subsequently flew with a number of units, including Nos. 13 and 2 Squadrons RAF, No. 7 Anti-aircraft Cooperation Unit, No. 239 Squadron RAF, and in the Far East with both Nos. 1 and 2 Squadrons of the Indian Air Force. The aircraft was finally written off after a heavy landing at Risalpur on 16 March 1943, while serving with No, 151 (Fighter) Operational Training Unit.

Royal Air Force Operations in the Middle East and North Africa, 1939-1943 Curtiss Kittyhawk Mark I, AK772 'GA-Y' 'London Pride', of No. 112 Squadron RAF is prepared for a sortie at Gambut Main, Libya. The ground crew can just be seen assisting the pilot to strap himself into the cockpit. The aircraft is carrying a 250-lb GP Bomb, fitted with a surface-burst impact fuse, under the fuselage. Note also the plugs placed in the exhaust stubs to keep the desert sand out. AK772 was lost on a ground attack mission near Bir Hacheim on 30 May 1942; its Australian pilot, Pilot Officer H G Burney, was killed.

The tubes fed hot air into the Napier Sabre engines, which were notoriously difficult to start in wintry conditions, and required this treatment at regular intervals to maintain serviceability.
