Congressional Medal of Honor Awarded Posthumously to Douglas Albert Munro, Signalman First Class, U.S. Coast Guard. Coast Guardsman Douglas A. Munro of South Cle Elum, Washington, has been awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, posthumously, the Navy Department has announced. The 22-year-old Coast Guardsman died at Guadalcanal. Munro, a signalman first class, volunteered to lead a fleet of ten boats under strong enemy fire to an exposed beach from which American troops were to be transferred to another point of attack. The Coast Guardsman successfully accomplished his task but was mortally wounded. Indicating his concern for the troops, his last words were, "did they get off".
