Admiral of the Fleet Sir Alfred Dudley Pound 1877 21 October 1943) Royal Navy officer. He served as First Sea Lord, the professional head of the Royal Navy, for the first four years of the Second World War. In that role his greatest achievement was his successful campaign against German U-boat activity and the winning of the Battle of the Atlantic. in July 1942. He died from a brain tumour shortly after resigning from office, having also suffered two strokes.

World War 1 - Sir David Beatty was born in Howbeck, Cheshire in 1871 and entered the Royal Navy at the age of 13, serving with distinction in the Sudan from 1896-98 and in China during the Boxer Rising of 1900. He was made Rear Admiral in 1910 and served as Winston Churchills Naval Secretary from 1911-13, after which he was appointed Commander of the Grand Fleets Battlecruiser Squadron in 1913, a position held at the outbreak of war in August 1914.

Admiral of the iceberg. Rear Admiral Edward H. Smith is his name on U.S. Coast Guard records, but he is better known to Coast Guardsmen as "Iceberg Smith" because of his enthusiastic, scientific interest in icebergs. One of the most colorful figures in the American naval services today, countless stories are told of him. He is commander of the Greenland Patrol, an executive position for which his years in Far Northern waters have well qualified him.
