Royal Air Force- 2nd Tactical Air Force, 1943-1945. Group Captain P G Wykeham-Barnes, while Officer Commanding No. 140 Wing at Hunsdon, Hertfordshire. during a long and varied career as a fighter pilot, Wykeham-Barnes shot down at least 15 enemy aircraft in the Middle East, North Africa and the United Kingdom between 1940 and 1943. He commanded Nos. 73, 257 and 23 Squadrons RAF in 1941-1942 and also became Wing Commander Fighters of the Desert Air Force. Back in the United Kingdom, he was appointed Sector Commander at RAF Kenley in June 1943, and then served on the Air Staff at the Air Ministry. He assumed command of 140 Wing in March 1944, to be followed by his final wartime appointment on the Air Staff of No. 2 Group of 2 TAF in December.

Coast Guard Combat Artist In Invasion of France. Coast Guard Combat Artist Tore Asplund, chief boatswain's mate and well known New York City marine artist and yachtsman, hit the Normandy invasion beach with the first assault group. Prior to D-Day, Chief Asplund painted murals of the French shore marked for invasion. Using reconnaissance photos as the basis of the murals, Asplund's work aided Coast Guard personnel in gaining a clear picture of the coast.

Photographed at his hotel in London.Lieut Commander Leon Verdi Goldsworthy of the Royal Australian Navy is Australia's most decorated hero; at the investiture at Buckingham Palace he received from the King the George Cross, the Distingushed Service cross and the George Medal - ail awarded within nine months in 1944. He is the hero of some of the most perilous enterprises of the war - de-sensitising underwater acoustic mines. Three months ago he was flown to Tokio to investigate Japanese mines, and he has flown back to Britain to receive his three medals. Lieut-Comdr. Goldsworthy, who is 36 years old, comes from Perth, Western Australia. In civil life he was a lighting engineer, and soon he is returning to Australia to start a new career in advertising. February 25, 1946.

The old four-masted barque Pamir is to be the first sailing ship in 25 years to go round the Horn on the voyage from New Zealand to England.Now in floating dock being surveyed and de-bar-nacled, the Pamir will load tallow and hides and 7500 bales of wool for England.The old Pamir has weathered the bleak Cape Horn many times since she rounded on her maiden voyage in 1906 from the Scilly Islands to Valparaiso.Captain H.S. Collier, of the Union Steamship Company, will continue in command of the Pamir and the crew is title changed from that which sailed the barque to Sydney earlier this year. September 14, 1947.
