Big Philippine Iron Mine -- This is one of the mines of the Philippine Iron Mines Company at Larap-Mambulao, on the principle island of Luzon in the Philippines. Rich iron ore deposits abound here and on the island of Cebu to the south. It was at Leyte, near Cebu, that U.S. General MacArthur's troops, at least 250,000 strong, landed from the greatest armada ever assembled in the Pacific, to begin the final liberation of the Philippines. The landings were announced by the General on Oct. 20, 1944. November 23, 1944. (Photo by U.S. Office of War Information Picture).
