Repair Operations Aboard the Sub-sinking Campbell. Repair operations aboard the sub-sinking CAMPBELL, call for daring action. Coast Guardsman Colon Swindell, Firemen 1c, of Wanchese, North Carolina, prepares to swim under the icy Atlantic waters with a messenger line and cork in his mouth. If the cork can be shoved through the hole in the side of the Coast Guard cutter, caused by ramming a Nazi U-Boat, it will bob up inside the ship. A stronger line will be fastened to the messenger line and a plug on the outside of the ship can be pulled tight from within to close a hole. The Coast Guard cutter routed six subs within 12 hours. The Campbell was brought to an unnamed East Coast port for repairs.

Bucheit, of 301 Brussels St., St. Marys, Pennsylvania, who was strafed by enemy airplane machine gun bullets as he landed troops in the attack on the African coast, is shown smiling with a V. for Victory at an East coast hospital. "Doc Sunshine" Makes His Rounds (3 of 3). (No. 3 om series of 3) His Best Bedside Manner - His name used to be "Half Hitch" but the wounded boys started calling him "Doc Sunshine" and the name stuck. "Doc" assigned himself to cheer up duty in the morale-upping division aboard a Coast Guard-manned troop transport. His ship brings back casualties from Europe's battlefields and "Doc" strolls from bunk to bunk, shaking paws and giving all the boys that "things are getting better every day" feeling. Coast Guard Cutter Sinks Sub. Coast Guard Cutter sinks sub. A U.S. Coast Guardsman, wounded in one of the outstanding dramatic engagements of submarine warfare in this global conflict, Robert J. Croak, motor machinist's mate first class, of 118 Sunset Road, Arlington, Mass., lies in his bunk aboard the Coast Guard Cutter SPENCER. His left hand and arm painfully injured, is supported by a wire frame and pins inserted through the fingers. Coast Guardsman Croak sustained his injuries during the ensuing battle when the Cutter SPENCER crippled a Nazi undersea raider with gunfire after the sub had been forced to the surface by a depth charge.

""It's an All-around Blessed Event"". There's some question about who seems the proudest - "Queenie," Coast Guardsman Charles Spadaro, Seaman First Class, left, of Albany, N.Y., or Corporal Robert B. Winter, Aus, of Cincinnati, Ohio. For Queenie, those two pups born in the Mediterranean aboard a Coast Guard-Manned troop transport was a blessed event. For Cpl. Winter, his presence on the ship and the birth of the pups would seem to be a super-special event. After campaigning in Europe he's returning home on rotation.

Indianapolis Coast Guard Hero in Hail of Nazi Invasion Fire Loses Only Seat of His Pants. Swimming in the surf through a hail of Nazi machinegun fire to carry a lifeline from his Coast Guard-manned landing craft to the Normandy beach, Coast Guardsman Gene E. Oxley, of Indianapolis, Indiana, was one of the Coast Guard heroes of the D-Day invasion of France. Standing on the beach in the hum of bullets, he held the rope while 36 soldier invaders attempted to follow the line to the shore--only six made it. On that memorable morning, Oxley was aboard three landing craft that were battered by German shellfire. He lay for hours in a shallow foxhole on the beach. The 20-year-old Indianapolis boy escaped wounds, but the seat of his pants was shot off. Back in England, he remarked "I guess I was just lucky," and his shipmates promptly called him "Lucky Ox.".
