60 Battalion, Australian Infantry, Australian Imperial Force Pte Nash, of Victoria, Australia served with A Company. He died on 24 July 1916, aged 21, of wounds received in the Australian charge at Fleurbaix during 19 - 23 July 1916. In this action, which formed part of the Battle of the Somme, Australian troops attempted to advance but were pinned down by German forces located behind them as well as in front of them. Cut off, they charged the German lines in an attempt to return to their original point of advance. He joined the Yorkshire Regiment as a lieutenant and was promoted to captain in December 1913. He was killed in action, aged 29, at Fortuin on 24 April 1915. At the time of his death, Captain Nancarrow was engaged to be married to a Miss Elsie Harkess. Iosif Rodionovich Apanasenko (1890 - 1943) Soviet division commander. fought in the Imperial Russian Army in World War I before going over to the Bolsheviks in the subsequent civil war. He commanded forces in both Central Asia and the Russian Far East. In June 1943, I.R. Apanasenko, after numerous requests to be sent to the front, was appointed deputy commander of the Voronezh Front. He visited units on the frontline and led them during the fighting. He was killed by an airstrike during the Soviet counteroffensive at Kursk.

In the image, Onoda, standing with his brother, when they were both officers in the Imperial Japanese Army.
