A Sunken Track with Travelers outside Brussels ca. 1649 Jan de Bisschop Brown wash beautifully evokes the subtle play of light on the rocks and foliage in this landscape that depicts a road on the outskirts of Brussels. The Dutch artist Jan de Bisschop drew almost exclusively in brown wash along with lines of pen and brown ink. He employed this technique in numerous copies of earlier works of art but he used it as well to render landscape. He probably created this drawing during a trip to Flanders in 1649. A small piece of paper inscribed in an early hand "buyten Brussel" (outside of Brussels), is attached to the verso of this sheet. A number of other drawings related to this trip that depict the area around Brussels are known. De Bisschop was a lawyer by trade but he mingled with an elite circle of intellectuals and artists in The Hague where he had set up a law practice in 1652.. Rocky Landscape with Eight Figures 1750-80 Imitator of Guercino (Giovanni Francesco Barbieri) Italian This landscape drawing and three others also in the Museum's collection (inv. nos. 17.97.17; 37.165.99; and 37.165.108) are typical and competent examples of the work of the forger (or forgers) of landscape drawings by Guercino who presumably worked in Italy during the second half of the 18th century. All four sheets are executed in a thick, pasty, dark red-brown ink that is the mark of such forgeries. Such drawings are sometimes direct copies after drawings by Guercino or facsimile reproductions thereof, but the four landscapes in the Museum's collection seem rather to be pastiches, composite compositions based on selective borrowings from Guercino's landscapes.. In the Park at Packington 1770-1812 Heneage Finch, 4th Earl of Aylesford British Active as a statesman and patron of British cultural institutions, Aylesford was also a gifted amateur draftsman and etcher. Before he became earl in 1777, the artist studied drawing as an undergraduate at Oxford. The strong ink outlines and assured application of wash in this mature drawing suggest a date in the mid-1780s. Italian precedents influenced his draftsmanship, but his expressive response to a tree found on his Warwickshire estate echoes Rembrandt. (Aylesford collected the seventeenth-century Dutch masters prints and learned to etch in a similar manner.) This drawing anticipates the poetic landscapes of the next centurys Romantic era, such as the work by Samuel Palmer that hangs nearby.. In the Park at Packington.
