The Princess of Orange Visiting the Work-shop of Bartholomeus van der Helst. Mary Stuart, the widow of Stadtholder William II, looks at her portrait in the workshop of the 17th-century painter Van der Helst. In the background is his unfinished monumental painting Banquet of the Civic Guard, in which the militiamen celebrate the end of the Eighty Years War. For his likeness of the princess, Scholten relied on an existing portrait, also by Van der Helst. Scholten thus demonstrated his knowledge of both 17th-century Dutch painting and national history.

This painting of Franz Hals and his wife was done by Franz Hals (1580-1666), a member of thr Diutch School of Haarlem, It is in the Rijks Museum in Amsterdam. Frans Hals the Elder was a Dutch Golden Age painter, chiefly of individual and group portraits and of genre works, who lived and worked in Haarlem. Hals played an important role in the evolution of 17th-century group portraiture. He is known for his loose painterly brushwork.

The Declaration of Love ca. 1724 Jean François de Troy These celebrated pendants exemplify a genre of painting known as tableaux de mode (paintings of fashionable society) established by de Troy. Rejecting religious or mythological subjects, artists represented the latest interior decoration, clothing, etiquette, and social mores. Mars and Venus, relegated here to wall decoration, cue the narrative to unfold, while the eager dog hints none too subtly at the passions concealed behind delicate gestures. In the 1720s, the meticulous rhyming of curves among picture frame, chair-rail, and sofa was extremely in vogue, but in de Troys composition it also underscores the theme of physical union.. A Merry Company on the Banks of the Rímac River Lima School. A Merry Company on the Banks of the Rímac River, ca.1800. Oil on canvas, 26 x 35 1/2 in. (66 x 90.2 cm). This painting from colonial Peru depicts the grounds of a country estate populated by privileged, peninsular Spaniards (people born in Spain) and members of the Creole elite (people of Spanish descent born in the Americas). They are accompanied by the Indigenous and African servants who dress, serve, and entertain them, thereby making the aristocrats leisure time possible. The unidentified artist completed this work in Lima, which was the capital of the Spanish Viceroyalty of Peru until that country gained its independence in the 1820s. While the white men wear suits fashionable at the time among cosmopolitan Europeans, their wealthy female counterparts dress in the characteristic native South American pollera ensemble, showing how the confluence of Indigenous and Spanish customs contributed to distinctive regional style

Date: ca. 1622.Van Uffel was a wealthy Flemish merchant who lived in Venice, where Van Dyck probably painted this portrait early in his Italian period (1621-27). In another portrait (Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum, Brauschweig), Van Dyck shows the same sitter authoritatively posed before a view of ships sailing off a Mediterranean coast. Ours, by contrast, shows Van Uffel as a learned gentleman, with signs of his varied interests: dividers, a recorder, the bow of a viola da gamba, an antique head, a drawing, and a celestial globe. Self-Portrait ca. 1665 Gerrit Dou Dutch Dou was Rembrandts first pupil, only seven years younger than his master. The older artist inspired his students lifelong commitment to self-portraiture, often in fanciful or theatrical costume. In some self-portraits, Dou adopted the guise of an aristocrat, but here he proudly displays the tools of his trade. Rather than adopt Rembrandts signature rough manner of painting, Dou became famous for his jewel-like surfaces and painstaking method, qualities that led Philips Angel to single him out as an exemplary artist in his lecture "The Praise of Painting.".
