Greek Peasantry Fleeing From Larissa. Greco-Turkish War 1897. This picture is from the late war between Greece and Turkey. The peasants of Larissa supposed themselves safe in the rear of the Greek army; but the sudden Greek retreat left them exposed to the cruelty of the unspeakable Turks. Realizing this, they fled from their homes in wild haste, carrying what they could of their household goods, in carts, or upon their backs. We can only faintly suggest the hurry, the confusion, the despair, the suffering of the bedridden grandames and untended babes. It is a picture of the misery of war.

Cetshwayo (Cetshwayo kaMpande) (c. 1826-1884). King of the Zulus (1872-1879). Restoration of King Cetewayo. Return of the king to his former territories after his captivity in England, following his capture by the British at the Battle of Ulundi (July 4, 1879), and his subsequent exile to Cape Town. In July 1882, Cetewayo was authorized to travel to the United Kingdom to seek support from British politicians for the restoration of the Zulu monarchy. Queen Victoria allowed him to return to Ulundi in January 1883, to rule a part of his former kingdom, without being able to have an army and with the obligation to cede part of his territory to another Zulu. The day after the installation of Cetewayo in Intonyanene, about fifteen miles from Ulundi, numerous deputations of the interior of the kingdom appeared in the camp, for the accomplishment of the ceremony that the natives called Indaba. Verney Lovett Cameron (1844-1894) English explorer in Central Africa. Born at Radipole near Weymouth, Dorset. Cameron's expedition to Africa (1872-1875). Being received by the king of the Congo. Cameron was chosen by the Royal Geographical Society to find Livingstone, but arrived after Livingstone was dead. He traced the Congo-Zambesi watershed for a great distance, and explored the southern half of Lake Tanganyika. Engraving from 'Le Journal de la Jeunesse' (Paris, c1879).

During the 19th century, rocket enthusiasts and inventors began to appear in almost every country. Some people thought these early rocket pioneers were geniuses, and others thought they were crazy. Claude Ruggieri, an Italian living in Paris, apparently rocketed small animals into space as early as 1806. The payloads were recovered by parachute. As depicted here by artist Larry Toschik, French authorities were not always impressed with rocket research. They halted Ruggieri's plans to launch a small boy using a rocket cluster. African American have a political discussion on a street in the American South, 1869. The Illustration appeared in 'Harper's Weekly', Nov. 1869, during the brief period from 1867 to the early 1870s, of Congressional Reconstruction. In the mid-1870s, white supremacists 'redeemed' the south, using violence which wore down the war weary nation's will to enforce the rule of law in the South (BSLOC_2019_5_151)

The slave party, a long line of manacled men, women, and children, came wending their way round the hill and into the valley, on the side of which the village stood. The black drivers, armed with muskets, and bedecked with various articles of finery, marched jauntily in the front, middle, and rear of the line; some of them blowing exultant notes out of long tin horns. They seemed to feel that they were doing a very noble thing, and might proudly march with an air of triumph'.
