Illustration showing a group of German 'frogmen' being captured by British soldiers, near Nijmegen, Holland, 28th September 1944.      These 'frogmen' were assault troops who swam down the Waal River with explosives to try to blow up the bridges at Nijmegen.  Having placed the charges, they began their escape but were spotted by British troops and captured.    As can be seen in the picture, the Germans were equipped with oxygen tanks, wetsuits and flippers.     Date: 1944

Emin Pasha (1840-1892), the Governor of the Egyptian Equatorial Province had to retreat to Wadelai, near Lake Albert, with 10,000 followers during the Mahdi Rising of the mid-1880's.    Cut off from all communication Emin Pasha was considered lost, so the British government sent out a rescue party led by H.M. Stanley (1841-1904).     Date: 1890

Before British colonisation in 1803, there were an estimated 3,000-15,000 Parlevar or native Tasmanians. As a result of colonial wars, mistreatment and starvation, the last of the full blooded Parelvar died in 1876. Jean-François de Galoup, Comte de La Pérouse (August 23, 1741-1788) was a French explorer and naval officer. In 1785, the King of France commissioned La Perouse to head an expedition to explore the Pacific Ocean, to investigate whaling and fur prospects, and to establish French claims in this area. La Pérouse had admired the explorer James Cook, and wanted to continue his work. La Perouse was assigned two 500-ton ships called the Astrolabe and the Boussole. His crew of 114 included sailors, scientists, a physicist, three draftsmen, three naturalists, clergymen, and a mathematician. They left France in August, 1785. La Perouse mapped the west coast of North America in 1786, and visited Easter Island and Hawaii. His ships reached the west coast of Alaska in 1786 and did exten

The Emin Pasha Relief Expedition was much harassed by the frequent attacks of the forest dwarfs armed with poison arrows, which wounded several members of the expedition. Usually, they would deliver an attack then disappear suddenly, but on the occasion pictured here, the natives made an especially determined stand, resulting in several of them being killed and wounded.

'It appears that Mr. Stanley, special correspondent of the New York Herald...was sent...to find Dr. Livingstone, with no instructions but that he should "have an unlimited credit to carry out his own plans and use his own means." It faced the followers of Sudanese religious leader Muhammad Ahmad bin Abdullah bin Fahal, the self-proclaimed Mahdi, against Egyptian Khedivate troops, who were later joined by British forces. Exterior of the Dongola Mudir's house, where General Wolseley received hospitality on his journey of exploration and was honoured by the Arab warlord.
