Bird's eye view of Ishpeming, L.S. Michigan : 1871. Indexed for points of interest.. America Transformed: The Lake Superior region became the nation's major supplier of iron ore after its discovery in Michigan's Upper Peninsula in the 1840s, while reservations were established and Anishinaabe (Ojibwe) lands were ceded. This view of Ishpeming, Michigan, provides an example of an iron mining community and the effects of mining operations on the surrounding landscape. The shaded areas on the surrounding hills depict open-pit iron mines. In the foreground, a train cuts across the landscape toward one mine, while a network of railroad tracks service other mines. Mattapan, Massachusetts, 1890. Includes ill. Indexed for points of interest. Bird's-eye view.. Mattapan, a smaller village located on the Neponset River directly east of Hyde Park, is depicted in this view. These neighboring villages were documented the same year by the same artist using a similar format. Mattapan is also viewed from the east placing the Neponset River and the central part of the village in the foreground. Since Mattapan was located in the town of Dorchester which was annexed by Boston in 1870, the two neighboring communities were separated politically. However, they appear to have been connected economically. Separate plants of the Tileston and Hollingsworth Paper Mill were located in each village. In fact, each drawing includes an inset illustrating the factory. But look closely! The factory depicted on the Mattapan view, which is labeled Tileston & Hollingsworth, Mattapan Mills, is not the same factory that is depicted in the view, directly above the inset. Comparis
