Whose Sleeves left of a pair, early 17th century, Unknown Japanese, 59 3/4 x 137 in. (151.77 x 347.98 cm), Ink, color, gold and silver on paper, Japan, 17th century, The artist who created this pair of folding screens was clearly inspired by the beautiful, colorful kimonos worn by wealthy women of the 1600s. He depicted a variety of women’s robes, some hung on ornate lacquer racks, others folded on the ground. In the painting, the lady who evidently owns these garments is absent. We, the viewers, are invited to imagine her beauty ourselves.

(173.04 × 375.29 × 1.91 cm) (mount), Ink and color on silver leafed paper, Japan, 18th century, While many Japanese artists featured heavy use of gold paint and gold leaf on folding screens, the artist of this pair used silver leaf instead. Over time, silver leaf oxidizes and turns a smoky gray shade but retains its metallic sheen. The screens present a selection of scenes from The Tale of Genji in no particular order. The upper middle of the left screen, for example, shows 12-year-old Genji at his coming-of-age ceremony. The courtiers cap he will wear as an adult male rests on a low table before him. The scenes around him and in the right screen are from varying stages of his life.

Two Scenes from "Der Busant" (The Buzzard) 1480-90 Upper Rhenish Rücklaken were intended to be hung around the walls of domestic interiors. In this narrative tapestry, two scenes from the late medieval poem, "The Buzzard," are illustrated. The prince of England is depicted as a wildman, and the princess of France meets a miller who offers her refuge. The middle high German inscription alludes to the princess seeking refuge, whereupon the man replies: "Willingly, though as a poor man I can offer you nothing." The Daoist Immortal Liezi ca. 1606 Kano School These panels depict Daoist immortal Liezi (Japanese: Resshi), who flies away on a cloud, while awestruck figures discuss his mysterious disappearance. These door panels, or fusuma, originally decorated the west wall in the central room of the abbots quarters (hōjō) at Ryōanji, a Zen temple in Kyoto. They are part of a set of forty panels depicting assorted Confucian and Daoist figures that were installed in the three rooms. Evidence suggests that this work was created by painters of the Kano studio under the direction of a son of Kano Eitoku (1543-1590). One candidate is Kano Kotonobu, Eitokus third son, who served as a painter for Ryōanjis chief patrons, the Hosokawa family, after his fathers death. The screens were dispersed and sold to private collectors in the early twentieth century. While some panels from the central room remain in Japan, panels from the adjoining room have been acquired by the Seattle Art Museum and other collec
