Papyrus Marsh. Artist: Hugh R. Hopgood. Dimensions: facsimile: h. 79 cm (31 1/8 in); w. 68 cm (26 3/4 in)scale 1:1framed: h. 81.6 cm (32 1/8 in); w. 71.4 cm (28 1/8 in). Dynasty: Dynasty 18. Reign: reign of Amenhotep II. Date: ca. 1427-1400 B.C..Excerpted from a scene that showed Qenamun fishing in the papyrus marshes, this fragment conveys a sense of life and movement -- as the marshes lay at the edges of the Egyptians' ordered world, they were associated with the undifferentiated and thus lively and chaotic realm which surrounded and threatened the cosmos, but from which all life ultimately sprang. The umbels of the papyrus plants are regimented, the open blossoms arranged carefully in three rows with a row of unopened buds below, yet the artist has used different sizes for the blooms, tilted them ever so slightly this way and that, and overlapped the flowering heads and their stalks in a seemingly random fashion. The ducks that fly at the top are almost identical in form and posi

A photograph taken within Tomb KV1, located in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt, used for the burial of Pharaoh Ramesses VII of the Twentieth Dynasty. Although it has been open since antiquity, it was only adequately investigated and cleared by Edwin Brock in 1984 and 1985. The single corridor tomb itself is located in Luxor's West Bank and is small in comparison to other tombs of the twentieth dynasty. Usermaatre Setepenre Meryamun Ramesses VII (also written Ramesses and Ramesses) was the sixth pharaoh of the twentieth dynasty of Ancient Egypt. He reigned from about 1136 to 1129 BC and was the son of Ramesses VI. The decoration within the passageway of the tomb contains illustrations from the Book of Gates, the Book of Caverns as well as the Book of the Earth. The walls of the burial chamber are decorated with extracts from the Book of the Earth.

2 of Tethers, from The Cloisters Playing Cards. Culture: South Netherlandish. Dimensions: 5 3/16 × 2 3/4 in. (13.2 × 7 cm). Date: ca. 1475-80.The Cloisters set of fifty-two cards constitutes the only known complete deck of illuminated ordinary playing cards (as opposed to tarot cards) from the fifteenth century. There are four suits, each consisting of a king, queen, knave, and ten pip cards. The suit symbols, based on equipment associated with the hunt, are hunting horns, dog collars, hound tethers, and game nooses. The value of the pip cards is indicated by appropriate repetitions of the suit symbol. The figures, which appear to be based on Franco-Flemish models, were drawn in a bold, free, and engaging, if somewhat unrefined, hand. Their exaggerated and sometimes anachronistic costumes suggest a lampoon of extravagant Burgundian court fashions. Although some period card games are named, it is not known how they were played. Almost all card games did, however, involve some form of g

Poncho or Tunic Nasca. Poncho or Tunic, 100-200 C.E. Camelid fiber, 74 7/16 x 27 9/16 in. (189.1 x 70 cm). This large panel is the most elaborate example of the discontinuous warp and weft technique in the Museums collection. With this technique, the warps and wefts on the textile change with every color and weaving session, rather than being continuous along the length and width of the fabric (see diagram). The bold designs on the red background include three large, colorful supernatural beings connected to several smaller figures. The largest figure wears a green and yellow feline pelt and is associated with two mythological animals devouring humans: an anthropomorphic bird and a shark depicted with a human arm. These composite beings combine animals of the natural world with Nasca supernatural deities who keep the world in order. The panel was converted into a poncho in antiquity, when a head opening was made at the center and long tassels were added at the shoulders. ___________

The studio of the artist Tingqua was perhaps the most prolific source of Chinese export painting during the nineteenth century. Located at 16 China Street, Guangzhou, the school specialized in gouache and watercolor paintings influenced by Western artistic traditions. These works became known in America primarily through the American China trader Augustine Heard, who brought a substantial collection of Tingqua paintings back to the United States in ca. 1855. These are now located at the Peabody Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. Tingqua was from a family of Chinese artists, each of whom were recognized for there skills in painting scenes suitable for the export market. His father, Guan Zuolin, often known by his western name, Spoilum, was the first identifiable artist of the Cantonese export school. Tingqua's work is perhaps most recognized for its exquisite characterization of daily life and for its exceptional detail. The precision of the brushwork and concentration upon light effects i
