Aerophone-Whistle Flute-flageoletLioness head ca. 8th-7th century B.C. Assyrian This flat piece of ivory was found in a storage room in Fort Shalmaneser, a royal building at Nimrud that was used to store booty and tribute collected by the Assyrians while on military campaign. It depicts a stylized lioness head, seen from above, with a central disc on the forehead framed by two symmetrical curved vertical lines. The ears and nose are small and the focus is on the large eyes, emphasized by a pair of curved eyebrows. Carved ivory pieces such as this were widely used in the production of elite furniture during the early first millennium B.C. They were often inlaid into a wooden frame using joinery techniques and glue, and could be overlaid with gold foil or inlaid to create a dazzling effect of gleaming surfaces and bright colors. This piece is one of many elaborately carved ivories with motifs adapted from Egyptian art that have been attributed to Phoenician workshops, as Phoenician art shows strong Egyptian influence. Stem of pedestal vase ca. 3100 B.C. Iran This ceramic tube is the pedestal of a goblet or stemmed bowl. It is made of red clay and decorated with black paint. It was excavated at Yarim Tepe in northeastern Iran, six miles south of the modern town of Gonbad-e Kavus. Yarim Tepe was a small settlement, inhabited from the Neolithic to the Parthian period, with many interruptions. Pedestal vessels have been discovered at other sites in the region, such as Shah Tepe, Tureng Tepe and Tepe Hissar, dating to the late Chalcolithic period. This pedestal probably dates to the same period, when this region served as an important link between the emerging cities of Mesopotamia and Afghanistan, one of the few sources of both tin and lapis lazuli in the ancient Near East.. JadeHelmet 5th century Mesopotamian or Iranian Surviving examples of Sasanian armor are extremely rare, particularly in such stunning condition as this helmet. It consists of a bronze band forming a rim and supporting two arched bands that cross over the top. Between these arched bands there are triangular plates of iron that are overlaid with sheets of silver worked in scale patterns. While the underlying iron is badly corroded, the bronze and silver are amazingly well preserved. Sasanian silversmiths were renowned for their craftsmanship, which can be seen in large silver plates embossed in low relief with royal hunts (for example, a plate in the Met, accession number 1994.402). The Sasanian heavy cavalry was famous for its prowess in battle. These attributes, of artistic and military achievement, are uniquely combined in this remarkable helmet.. Hutzel, Max 1960-1990 Exterior views of part of the former Villa Frigeri, which along with a neighboring palazzo, houses the Museo Nazionale di Antichita. Views also of the gardens, fountain (17th century) and the restored interior. The so-called "Capestrano Warrior" (5th century B.C.) is found in the Antiquities core collection under Men, Youths, Warriors--Stone--Etruscan, Italic. Hutzel views include statues, funerary monuments, portrait busts and mosaics, many of which were excavated from Alba Fucens. Hutzel paid particular attention to the colossal statue of Hercules (late Hellenistic); the funerary temple reliefs of Lucius Storax; various nudes, torsos and heads, including the portrait bust of Agrippina Minore and the sepulchral portrait relief of Lucius Poditius (1st century A.D.); gravestones with inscriptions and bas-reliefs; Roman coins; bronze figurines (mainly warriors); and bronze vessels, utensils, helmets and ornaments.Necklace of beads and amulets ca. 1550-1458 B.C.
